What are matching gifts?

Corporate matching gifts are a form of corporate philanthropy where businesses match the charitable contributions made by their employees to nonprofit organizations. When an employee donates to a nonprofit, they can request that their company match the contribution. Once the request is approved, the employer donates an equivalent amount to the same organization.

Most companies match donations on a 1:1 basis, though some offer higher match rates. Limits and specific conditions may apply, such as minimum and maximum donation amounts.

EXAMPLE

For example, Intel allows employees to donate up to $2,000 to eligible nonprofits like Summit School, while also providing an additional $8,000 match for initiatives that support STEAM education, a key focus at Summit. In theory, an Intel employee can donate $10,000 to Summit, and the school will receive $20,000 total using Intel’s matching program.

Matching Gift Programs

Many other companies also offer matching gift programs, which often extend beyond full-time employees to include retirees. To maximize the impact of your donation, be sure to check with your employer to see if they participate in a matching program. You don’t have to have a child enrolled in Summit to take advantage of these programs, so they are great ways for grandparents, friends and other relatives to multiply their impact as well.

Volunteer Grants

In addition to matching donations, some companies provide volunteer grants, where they donate money to the school in recognition of your volunteer hours. Since so many in the Summit community regularly volunteer, this is an easy way to access additional funding while contributing to the school’s vibrant community.
